Long Beach - Robert Casey and Bill Stroup were both honored on April 14th for 50 years of membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Post 3937 Commander Al Synowiez presented each man with a pin symbolizing five decades of service. It is a remarkable achievement for a person to have a 50 year membership in the VFW, but it's more remarkable that there would be two men in the same post today who joined in the same month in 1948 half a world apart. Robert Casey served in the US Army from 1941 to 1943, in the Signal Corps of Patton's Third Army. He saw service in Europe, to include participation in the Battle of the Bulge. Casey joined the VFW in 1948, originally with the Major Charles Hunt Post in Chicago, IL. Bill Stroup served in the US Navy from 1946 to 1976. "Thirty years and ten days", he states proudly. Though he was stationed many places and saw hostile action, the most memorable segment of his career came between December 1955 and January 1957. For these 13 months he was a member of "Operation Deep Freeze", long term scientific projects in the Antarctic, both at Little America #5 and Byrd Station. Stroup joined the VFW in 1948 at Naval Operations Base Trinidad, in the West Indies. Both men have served the VFW in many official capacities at the local and higher levels. Robert Casey is currently the Surgeon of the Eddy Blake VFW Post, and Bill Stroup is a Trustee. |
